Point Dume Beach CA

For the most part Point Dume State Beach consists of wide and flat expanses of beach, overlooked by expensive properties. Luckily, for the most part, these real-estate eyesores are not visible from the sands. The northern end of the beach runs into Zuma beach – making an almost 2 mile continuous stretch of sand. At the southern end of the beach, the cliffs rise up culminating in the impressive Point Dume.

The beach is a fine place to relax and catch some rays. The swimming is lovely, but can be a little on the cold side, even in summer. The surfing’s good too, but some prefer Zuma, which offers more reliable breaks.

The steep cliffs of Point Dume are popular with climbers. You’ll need full gear and ropes to make the climb – the easiest way up is a straight-forward 5.7. The area is also popular with wedding parties – the lovely scenery makes for great wedding photos. (Though I’m yet to see a climbing bride!). Just beyond Point Dume lies another fine beach – well worth a visit.

If you like your walking, try the hike along the Zuma-Dume trail which wends its way behind the beaches up to the Point. From the headland the views are breathtaking, taking in Santa Monica Bay to the east, and the beautiful Malibu coastline to the west. On a clear day you can spot Catalina Island..

The regular State Beach facilities are available – these include restrooms, showers, and a picnic area. The beach is lifeguard patrolled during the daytime.

To reach Point Dume, exit Santa Monica going North on the PCH (Hwy 1). After about 20 miles, make a left to Zuma Beach (clearly signed). Continue along the beach road, on past the Zuma parking lots. Turn right onto Westward Beach Road, which continues along the beach. After about ½ a mile, you’ll find the Point Dume beach parking area.
