Sand Harbor, Nevada

Mark Twain, on visiting Lake Tahoe, exclaimed 'Every little pebble was distinct, every speckled trout, every hand's-breadth of sand'. The water quality might not be so amazing now (apparently it’s deteriorated slightly due to global warming), but the waters are still crystal clear with a deep blue color that no camera can catch.

Lake Tahoe is fringed by several fantastically scenic beaches. Sand Harbor has perhaps the best. The sand here is very fine, and so soft it’s a real treat for your feet. And the beach itself is only one part of a perfect scene. You have to add in the clear blue waters of the wide lake, the sculptured boulders, the tree-lined shoreline, the mountain backdrop and huge sky to get the full picture.

Sand Harbor is part of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, and offers a good range of facilities. Picnic tables, restrooms, showers, a boat launch, a big group area and an information center. Also visit the pleasant Harbor House Bistro offering good value tasty food, plus a range of Beach goods.

From the boat launch, the Sand Harbor to Memorial Point trail wends northwards just above the lake shore. After about a mile you reach the point, a wonderfully scenic spot.

Sand Harbor hosts the annual Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. If you like the bard, it’s worth planning your vacation to coincide with Festival week. Go to the play armed with a light picnic, and a little knowledge of the plot (otherwise some Shakespeare can seem a little unfathomable).

Sand Harbor is located on State Route 28, just three miles south of Incline Village. There are 2 entrances; the northern one is just for the boat ramp. No pets are allowed.
