Amsterdam
DescriptionAmsterdam started as a small fishing settlement in the 12th century. The unique layout seen today is the result of development work during the 17th century, when a series of concentric circular canals were dug around the town centre. Magnificent town houses were built on the banks of these new canals.
All art lovers will love Amsterdam. See the superbly detailed Vermeers and Rembrandts at the Rijksmuseum, the colourful Van Goghs at the Van Gogh museum, and the wacky geometric abstract art of Malevich at the Stedellijk. If you feel in a reflective mood, visit the Jewish Quarter and tour Anne Frank's house. A very moving experience.
