Galveston
DescriptionGalveston city is located on a barrier island off the Gulf
coast of Texas about 40 miles southeast from Houston.
The city has a long a proud history - perhaps its most
challenging time was the Great Storm of 1900 - after
which the whole city was raised 15ft, and a great sea wall
was built. Today, Galveston is a major city and can boast
of original historical sights, boat tours of the bay, miles of
beaches and more than a dozen museums.
There is lots to do for the visitor. Visit the Ocean Star
Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum to see at first-hand an
offshore petroleum facility. Check out the three masted
tall ship Elissa at the Texas seaport museum. Immerse
yourself in history at the 1892 Bishop's Palace. Scare
yourself silly at the Schlitterbahn Waterpark. Spend a
day at Moody Gardens with its three easy-to-spot
structures, the blue Aquarium pyramid, the glass
Rainforest pyramid and the pink Discovery Pyramid. Or
spend a day at friendly Stewart beach in front of the
seawall.
