Gone With The Wind
PlotSet in the Civil War, the central figure is Scarlett O'Hara, a spoilt, vain, southern Belle. But the Civil War starts, and Scarlett proves that's she's got a steely core below the frivolous exterior.

Why in 100 Best?
Brilliant dialogue. My favorite is Scarlett's outburst - she's standing in the near-barren vegetable patch. Her face is studded with grim determination - 'As god is my witness, I shall never go hungry again'.
