Marie Antoinette
PlotMarie Antoinette's parents, Francis I and Empress Maria Theresa arrange a marriage for her with the French Dauphin Louis Auguste. The 14 year old Marie leaves for France, and in a ceremony at the border, has all her Austrian clothes and possessions swapped for French ones. Within a day of arriving at the Palace of Versailles, she marries the 15 year old Dauphin.
Her early days at the Palace are hard for the lonely princess. She falls out with the King's mistress, Madame du Barry, and her marriage seems on rocky grounds, because it remains unconsummated, despite her attempts in bed to gently persuade her husband . Then the King dies, and the Dauphin become Louis XVI. Marie Antoinette becomes queen. Her new found power enables her to make changes in the Palace. She banishes Madame du Barry, pursues her fondness for gambling, and spends outrageous amounts on fashion and diamonds. Marie Antoinette ignores the austerity outside the Palace gates.
